new antifungal agent

The new antifungal SPA-S-753/SPK-843 has reached the clinical stage
" A single, ascending dose, safety, tolerability and
pharmacokinetic phase I study in healthy volunteers with the new antifungal
agent SPK-843 has been completed without showing any serious local or systemic
adverse reaction. The study has been GCP-conform and carried out with double
blind treatment.
SPK-843 has main indication in the treatment of severe deep-seated infections
by Candida, Aspergillus, Cryptococcus and other sensitive microorganisms
by means of slow intravenous infusion.
In experimental tests in vitro and in vivo, it proved to be the
most potent and effective of all antifungals known, particularly
in the immunocompromised host, and is also better tolerated than amphotericin
B-like compounds.
The new Dutch Company APARTS BV based in Rotterdam has acquired worldwide
rights for its development.
Licence for Japan has been assigned, while contacts are still pending with
US and European Companies. "
